A Piet Botha Exhibition – Band of Portraits

If you would like to place an order or have any questions, please feel free to contact Jessica Botha 083 464 3281

In memory of The Hammer’s altruistic nature, a percentage of the profits will be donated to two charities: Join Bands, Not Gangs, a registered NPO from Cape Town that uses donated instruments to start programs that can help at-risk youth avoid joining gangs by staying constructively busy, and the Feed Malongane Initiative that sustains families in Piet’s beloved Mozambique.

Gideon Breytenbach – The Pilgrim 2014

Schutte – Gaan groot Generaal 2016

A mind filled with photos, a heart filled with rock ‘n roll. A life filled with magical moments.

Die foto van Piet het ek geneem by Woodcrock 11 in 2016 by die Blue Moon in Nelspruit.  Piet Botha, Jack Hammer en Blue Moon is vir my altyd sinoniem met van die beste rock ‘n roll memories.  Jack Hammer was my eerste headliner wat ek ooit live gesien het, ek was about 18/19 jaar oud. I was sold on it and I knew it was gonna be part of me for a very long time.

Hannie du Plessis – Elementary Blues 2007

I decided to become a photographer at the age of 16. I clearly remember the moment. I was standing amongst the crowd at the Tuks Rag show. Jack Hammer was on stage. The “Hammer” shared an in-house joke with bass guitarist Tertius du Plessis. Most of the crowd were oblivious and rhythmically rocking and moshing away on the music, eyes closed, completely entranced. I realised how many moments in life we miss. I wanted to be some who captured those moments. At that precise moment, I decided to become a photographer.

If you only have someone’s attention for about 1/16 of a second, What would you show? My aim is to capture the spiritedness of human nature, whether it is in a corporate environment or on a street in Varanasi. I stalk moments of authenticity. I feel most alive when photographing. My cameras of choice are my Canon EOS 1V and my I-phone. I am a student of the light.  A photograph is not an opinion or is it? …

The image was taken at STRAB many moons ago on my 20D. It is one of my favourite images as it reminds me that life is untraversed and that the most important elements of life are the elementary ones.

Bitterfontein.”

Henry Engelbrecht – Piet Botha 60 2015

IT consultant by day, band photgrapher by night, avid supporter of South African music.

About the photo:

I had the incredible honour of being asked to photograph Piet’s 60th Birthday Bash at the Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria. It was as if everything came together that night, and I will never forget it. The love and respect from the crowd and his fellow musicians was palpable.  His skill and superb musicianship shone like a bright light. I took many photos that night, but this one stood out for me because of its simplicity.

Piet in his happy place, looking up and connecting with the crowd.

Lien Botha – Dan Stilte. Soos na ‘n storm 2003

Lien Botha is one of the few South African artists who has been experimenting with the photographic medium beyond its documentary frame. Born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1961, she initially studied languages at the University of Pretoria and worked as a Press photographer for Beeld before moving to Cape Town where she obtained a BA Fine Arts degree from the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 1988.

Botha’s introduction to alternative mediums such as printmaking, painting, sculpture, and text, determined the output of her work over the past three decades. Up to date she has participated in numerous South African and international group shows and has curated eight exhibitions.

In December 2014 she was awarded a Master of Arts (Creative Writing) from the University of Cape Town. Her first novel Wonderboom, with its virtuosic visual companion piece, was published by Queillerie in June 2015. Wonderboom earned critical acclaim, amongst which the Jan Rabie Rapport-prize as well as the Eugène Marais-prize. The subsequent Dutch translation by Robert Dorsman, published by Zirimiri, was very well received in the Netherlands.

Besides maintaining a professional photographic practice, Lien Botha has been invited as guest lecturer in the Arts Faculties of various tertiary institutions such as the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, and Studio Art Centres International, Florence, Italy. Her work is represented in pivotal collections throughout South Africa as well as in key private collections locally and abroad.

In April 2021 her 13th solo exhibition Lost in Translation will open at Barnard Gallery in Cape Town and her second novel Vin is due for release in July 2021.

Jo Splice – Hummingbird 2011

Jo Splice has been a professional photographer since 1997. He is commissioned by leading global companies for his precise attention to detail and his exquisite control of light.

Jo’s work covers advertising, beauty and fashion photography for commercial clients and portraits for personal work. Having started his career in photojournalism he is comfortable across a range of genres. Jo’s ethos is to create conceptual images with a focus on detail and the visual philosophies for creating outside the normal frame.

About the photo:

I was commissioned by Rapport to do a photo essay of Piet Botha that would coincide with the launch of his new album, ‘Spookpsalms’. We agreed to do the shoot at his home in Pretoria.  After having ‘tea’ and a chat, we did various setups to deliver the full perspective of Piet’s life for the essay. We created artificial smoke in the garden to convey the concept of life and death…We did some intimate studio options…and then we went over to his bedroom to create the shots where he sits on the bed with his beloved

hummingbird guitar.  I really liked his sense of humor. I feel honored and privileged to have been given the opportunity to work with Piet. He was a visionary with a unique character and outlook on life. A true legend of our time.

Neels Venter – Bra Piet 2021 – SOLD

Artist, cartoonist, graphic designer, poker player extraordinaire and weapon of mass seduction.

Hein Waschefort – The Legend 2019

Since I can remember I perceived the world around me in pictures – objects, people, places, dimensions, perspectives and even words – and I have always had the urge to record and communicate what I see. So I started drawing, painting and sculpting, and ended up studying fine arts at university.

Then I discovered a camera, film and a darkroom and found a new exciting medium for my art: photography. For me as a visual artist, the digital era provides endless opportunities to create images across platforms and disciplines, combining photography with digital art, graphics and presentations.

My career as a conceptual artist and photographer started in 1980. During the next year, when I was appointed as a photography lecturer at the then Pretoria Technical College, I discovered that I had a flair for teaching visual arts, particularly photography.

I developed courses and course materials and later I was co-founder of VSS Creative Photo & Design College. On the education and training side, in addition to being Course Developer at VSS, I conduct masterclasses on a regular basis over weekends.

About the piece:

A salute to my life-long friend Piet Botha who suddenly passed away in 2019.

Louise Pieterse – Piet in Repose 2015

Experiencing life through a lens has given me the unique opportunity to savoir the “in between” moments. The moments when the smiles stop, the hair is messy again and glitter has worn off. The moments when the true self comes out. Those are the moments I cherish. Whether it be rock ‘n rollers or locals in Asian highlands, there is always a moment waiting to happen.

About the photo:

In-between rehearsals and the climactic performance, Piet sat down to get to know the ivories before his grand 60th birthday showcase.

The Fisherman 2021

This landscape photo and the song lyrics for ‘Fisherman’ by Piet Botha & Jack Hammer was a match waiting to happen.

About the photo: Bazaruto Islands, Mozambique

While on a week-long shoot at one of the hotels located on the island, we were forced to take a break one day on account of bad weather. Having noticed the low tide receding quite far back into the distance, leaving local fishing boats stranded on the coast, I noticed these weathered poles leading down the beach. After speaking to one of the local fishermen, I realised they use these poles during high tide to attach their fishing nets before the tide recedes. Braving the fierce winds sandblasting my back, I set my camera up and shot a multi-image panorama to capture the vast stretch of this installation along the beachfront.

‘n Klein bietjie Reen 2021

Piet’s lyrics in ‘Klein Bietjie Reën’ are representative of the mood captured in this photo.

About the photo: Dawidskraal Beach, Betty’s Bay, Western Cape Province

I spent 9 months along this stretch of coast during lockdown, while waiting for my UK visa to arrive. It gave me ample time to explore every bit of the rocky coastline and wait for the perfect light. This particular day I set up my camera, waiting for the sunset as I was suddenly surprised by about 20 divers popping out of the water next to me, all carrying bags of Abalone and Crayfish. It was a mixture of emotions as I got the shot I was after, but witnessing the destruction of the Betty’s Bay biosphere at the same time.

Jessica Botha

Industry-born and rock ‘n roll-fed, Jessica Botha has been involved in the music scene as a promoter, photographer, events coordinator, graphic

designer, booking agent and tour manager for almost two decades.  Daughter of late Piet Botha, Jess has been capturing most of the gigs,

memories and moments on camera since 2001 when she started touring with Piet and the band.

This entire exhibition has been curated by Piet’s three daughters, Jess, Robynne and Piya, with some professional help from their aunt Lien Botha.  “We wanted to keep the memory of Piet alive as well as give something back to the friends, fans and family…a piece to take home as well as raising money for the artists and for the two chosen charities: The Feed Malongane Initiative and ‘Join Bands Not Gangs’.”

All works by Jessica Botha are some of Piet’s favourite images over the years and the lyric pieces were specially designed by the three sisters based on their favourite songs written by their dad.
